It’s that easy to build a portable arch!
How to build a portable wedding arch
The first step of the project is to build the base components for the triangle. Use a miter saw to make a 22.5 degree cut to one end of the board. Afterwards, you need to make a half lap joint to the other end of the component.
Mark the area for the half lap joint and set the circular saw depth to 3/4″. Make parallel cuts inside the area and then remove the excess with a chisel and clean the surface with sandpaper.
*A complete diagram with this components (shape, angles, dimensions) is included in the Premium Plans.
Make the 3/4″ deep half lap joint to the bottom of the board, as shown in the diagram. Use the same technique described above.
Make another half lap joint, to the other end of the component, on the opposite side of the board. Use the same technique to create the 3/4″ half lap joint.
Next, we need to assemble the triangle. Join them together on a level surface. Drill two 1/4″ holes through the components, as shown in the diagram. Insert 1/4″ thick 2″ long bolts and then lock them together with wing nuts. Use a washer as well (keeps the bolts locked). The wing nuts make the assembly alot easier.
Repeat the process when assembling the stakes together. Align the edges flush and consider clamping them together so they don’t move, when making the 1/4″ pilot holes. Insert the two 1/4″ thick and 2″ long bolts and then attach the washers and wing nuts.
Continue the project by attaching the triangle to the base slats. Center the vertical supports to the base 2×6 boards. Drill pilot holes through the base board and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the arch.
Adding the braces
Next, we need to build the braces for the triangle arch. To get the job done we need a compound miter saw. Set the saw at 45 degree miter and 22.5 degree bevel cut. Make the cuts to one end, as shown in the image. Make a simple 45 degree cut to the opposite end of the brace.
Next, drill pocket holes to both ends of the 2×4 braces.
Plumb the triangle with a spirit level and attach the braces to both sides of the arch. Insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the braces into place tightly.
The compound cut end will sit on the horizontal support of the wedding arch.
Once assembling the wedding arch, you have to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the pocket holes with plugs and then fill all the gaps with filler. Smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper and then apply a few coats of stain / paint to enhance the look of the arch and protect the elements from decay
You can see in this diagram the components for the arch, when it’s disassembled.
