Building a bistro chair

Building the frame of the chair

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame for the bistro chair. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to cut the components out of 1×3 lumber.

Top Tip: Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 13″ long components, as well as at both ends of the brown components. Align the components with attention and insert 1 1/4″ screws to create rigid joints.

Building the seat

The next step of the outdoor project is to build the seat for the bistro chair. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to cut the components at the right size.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the middle components and secure them to the side slats using 1 1/4″ screws. Place the middle slats equally-spaced and add glue to enhance the bond of the joints.

Fitting the seat to the frame

Center the frame of the chair to the seat, as described in the diagram. Drill pocket holes through the frame and insert 1 1/4′ screws into the seat slats. Add glue to the joints and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Fitting the legs

The next step of the garden project is to attach the 1×4 slats to the frame of the chair. Cut the legs at the right size and align them to the structure, as described in the diagram.

Top Tip: Drill pilot holes through the legs and attach them to the frame by using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess. Plumb the legs with a spirit level and make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the bottom braces

In order to enhance the rigidity of the chair, we recommend you to attach 1×2 supports to the legs, as described in the image. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 13 1/2″ long components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the perpendicular components.

Make sure the corners are square and add glue to enhance the bond of the joints. Use a spirit level to make sure the supports are horizontal before inserting the screws into the legs.

Bistro chair plans

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wood chair in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
