Building a wooden chest
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the faces of the treasure chest. In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to take accurate measurements and to adjust their size using a circular saw.
Lay the 1×6 slats on a level surface and secure them together with several 1×4 cleats. Make sure you align the slats at both ends and leave no gaps between the components.
Continue the project by fitting the side walls to the treasure chest. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the side slats and secure them to the front and back faces by inserting 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled and add glue to the joints.
Cut the bottom component out of 3/4″ plywood and drill pocket holes along the edges. Fit the bottom component into place and secure it to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to enhance the rigidity of the bond.
Building the lid for the treasure chest is a straight-forward process, but you need to pay attention to the instructions in the diagram. As you can easily notice, we recommend you to build a simple frame. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the curved supports and lock them to the 1×2 slats.
Building the arches supports is the next step of the woodworking project. Therefore, we recommend you to mark the cut lines on the 1×4 slats and to make the cuts with a jigsaw. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues before fitting the slats.
Attach the 1×2 slats to the frame of the lid, making sure you leave no gaps between them.
Top Tip: Work with attention and invest in high quality materials, if you want to get a professional result.
If you want to enhance the appearance of the chest, we recommend you to fit the trims to the lid. Use a table saw to make the trims out of 1×1 lumber.
Attach the lid to the treasure chest and lock it to the frame by using several metal hinges.
Top Tip: Work with attention and make sure you align the components with attention before inserting the screws.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip:Â If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the table from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the chest in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
