How to build a little free library house

Base

Base

The first step of the project is to build the base for the little free library house. As you can see in the diagram, you need to use 4×4 lumber for the components. Use a circular saw to make parallel cuts inside the support and then remove the excess with a chisel. Clean the surface with sandpaper. Lock the components together with 4 1/2″ screws

If you want to set the post into concrete, you need to add 3′ to the post length. Alternatively, you could just pour a concrete footing and use a post anchor. Irrespective of your choice, make sure you plumb the posts with a spirit level before locking it into place.

Base supports

Use 4×4 lumber for the side supports. Use a circular saw to make the decorative cuts to the supports. Drill pocket holes along the both sides of the supports and then secure them into place with 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square.
