12×12 One Horse Barn Plans

This step by step diy project is about 12×12 one horse barn plans. This is a small barn that is ideal for sheltering one horse and it features a nice Dutch door to the front. This barn has a lean to roof with a medium slope (2:12). Make sure you check the local codes and make adjustments to the plans, if required. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a 12×12 barn shed

Laying-out-the-posts-for-the-barn

Laying-out-the-posts-for-the-barn

The first step of the project is to layout the location of the 4×4 posts. Use matter boards and string to layout the contour of the posts. In addition, apply the 3-4-5 rule to every corner so you make sure they are right-angled. Check if the diagonals are equal and make adjustments, if needed.

Fitting the posts

Fitting the posts

After marking the location of the posts, you need to dig 3′ deep holes 12″ in diameter. Fit tube forms and then install the 4×4 posts. Plumb the posts vertically and set them into place with temporarily braces.

Assembling-the-double-header

Assembling-the-double-header

Build the top headers for the front and back walls of the barn shed from 2×8 lumber. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to fit a piece of 1/2″ plywood between the 2×8 beams. Add glue to the joints, align the edges and insert 2 1/2″ screws from both sides.

Fit the headers to the front and to the back posts. Use appropriate hardware to lock the headers to the posts.

Framing the walls

Back wall supports

Fit 2×6 beams to the base of the frame. Toenail the beams to the posts. Afterwards, install the 2×4 supports to the back wall. Place the supports equally spaced. Use nails to secure the supports to the 4×4 posts. Make sure the corners are square for a professional result.

Fit the 2×4 supports to the sides of the horse barn, as well.
