2×4 Chair Plans

This step by step diy project is about 2×4 outdoor chair plans. This patio chair features a modern and simple design and it only requires 2x4s. If you are looking for straight forward plans for making a backyard wooden chair, this project might suit your needs as a glove. You only need basic tools and skills to build these chairs, but you will also save a significant amount of money. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. Building an outdoor chair from 2x4s

Building-the-front-legs

The first step of the project is to build the front legs for the chair. Cut one end of the 2×4 slats at 85 degrees using a miter saw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper for a professional result.

Building the back legs

Next, you need to build the back legs for the 2×4 chair. Cut one end of the slats at 87 degrees and the other end at 67 degrees. Smooth the edges with sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Cutting the top of the back legs

Next, you need to make an extra cut to the top of the back legs, as shown in the diagram. Mark the cut lines on the legs and get the job done with a saw.

Fit the 2×4 supports to the legs of the chair, so you can build the sides. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes through the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the legs. Leave no gaps between the components for a professional result. In addition, add waterproof glue to the joints to enhance the rigidity of the frame.

Fitting the front support

Fit a 2×4 to the front of the chair, as shown in the plans. Cut the support from 2×4 lumber at 14 1/2″. Drill pilot holes at both ends and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the side supports. Make sure you countersink the head of the screws for a neat result.

Fitting the seat slats

Continue the project by attaching the 2×4 slats to the seat of the chair. Leave no gaps between the slats and drill pilot holes at both ends before inserting the 2 1/2″ screws to secure them into place.

Fitting the backrest support

Build the support for the backrest from 2×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends and secure them to the back legs with 2 1/2″ screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints for a professional result.

Building the backrest panel

Assemble the backrest from 2×4 slats. Drill pocket holes to the slats, as shown in the free plans. Lay the slats on a level surface, align the edges and clamp them together tightly. Insert 2 1/2″ pocket screws to assemble everything tightly.

Fitting the backrest

Fit the backrest to the frame of the chair and align the edges in a professional manner. Drill pilot holes through the backrest support and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the slats.

Build a 2×4 chair

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of stain or paint to enhance the look of the chair and to protect the components from the elements.

As you can see, this chair has a modern design from all angles. If you want to build more than just a functional chair, a true conversation piece, you should give this project a try.
