Outdoor Bench from 2x4s – DIY Project

From Mary Bergman‎,

This was a joint project with my 17 year old son, who is working towards his Eagle Scout and has been building a meditation garden at our church. He wanted a pair of benches for the garden and we put the two of them together over a week (just working in the mornings when it was cooler).

We do plan to waterseal them before delivering them, but otherwise they are finished and look amazing. I love how everything in the design reinforces something else and these should provide years of service.

Total cost for both was just over $100 for lumber, good quality deck screws and wood glue. The only modification I made was to skip the pocket holes on the horizontal cross support at the bottom. I have the stuff to do them but didn’t see a need since all the other screw heads are exposed in the bench (so no aesthetic advantage) and the extra strength seemed less necessary in a non-load-bearing component. Also I’m lazy.
