This step by step diy project is about 10×8 barn shed roof plans. This article is PART 2 of the 10×8 barn shed, where I show you how to assemble the trusses and how to make the double doors. Make sure you check out the rest of the project, so you learn how to build the frame of the shed. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building a 10×8 Gambrel Shed Plans

Rafters

Rafters

Build the rafters for the barn shed from 2×4 lumber. Make 22.5 degree cuts to both ends of the rafters. You can use a miter saw so you make the repetitive cuts easily. Also notice the notches for the base rafters. We need the notches so we can fit the trusses easily to the frame of the shed.

Fitting-the-gussets

Fitting-the-gussets

Assembling the trusses is a straight-forward process, once you have cut all the rafters to size and shape. Lay the rafters on a level surface and then secure them together with 1/2″ plywood gussets. Use 1 5/8″ screws and waterproof glue to lock the components together tightly. Ideally, you need to attach the gussets on both sides of the trusses.

Fitting-the-trusses

Fitting-the-trusses

Fit the trusses to the top of the barn shed, making sure you place them every 16″ on center. Use a spirit level to plumb the trusses and then lock them into place with rafter ties and 1 1/2″ structural screws.

Gambrel-end-supports

Gambrel-end-supports

Build the supports for the gambrel end panels from 2×4 lumber. Make a 22.5 degree cut to the top of the supports using a miter saw. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and then secure them into place with 2 1/2″ screws.

Front-panels

Front-panels

Cut the panels for the barn shed at the right dimensions and shape and then lock them to the front and to the back of the shed, using 6d nails. Align the edges flush and then leave no gaps between the panels. Insert the nails every 8″ along the framing.

You should also make the cutouts around the front double doors.

Assembling-the-overhangs

Assembling-the-overhangs

Assemble the overhangs for the barn shed from regular rafters and 2×4 blockings. You easily adjust the size of the overhangs to suit your needs. Drill pilot holes through the rafters and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the blockings. Add waterproof glue to the joints for a neat and professional result.

Roof-sheets

Roof-sheets

Use 1/2″ plywood panels for the roof of the barn shed. Cut the components at the right dimensions and then lay them to the roof of the barn shed using the pattern from the image. Use 1 5/8″ screws to lock the panels into place, every 8″ along the rafters.

Gambrel-end-trims

Gambrel-end-trims

Use 1×6 lumber for the roof trims. Make a 22.5 degree cut to both ends of the trims and smooth the cut edges with sandpaper.

Fitting-the-roofing

Fitting-the-roofing

Cover the roof of the shed with roofing felt, making sure the strips overlap at least 2″. Secure the tar paper to the plywood sheets with roofing staples. In addition, cut a large piece for the top ridge.

Fit the side drip edges over the roofing felt, while the bottom drip edges should be fit under. Read the instructions labeled on the asphalt shingle packs before installing them into place tightly. Start with the bottom left side of the roof and install them all the way to the top.

Fit the shed window to the side opening and then attach the 1×3 trims around the window.

Building double shed doors

Door-jambs

Door-jambs

Fit the 2×4 jambs around the double door opening. Align the edges flush and insert 3 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.

Door-frame

Door-frame

Use 2×4 lumber for the door frame. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical and middle components. Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square. Insert 2 1/2″ screws to assemble the door frame.

Attaching-the-door-panels

Cut the panels for the shed doors, as shown in the diagram. Align the edges flush and insert 1 5/8″ screws through the panels into the door frame.

Fit the double doors to the opening and align everything with attention. Attach hinges and a latch to lock the doors into place tightly.
