DIY Project – Window Catio
From Chris,
I have cats living in my shop & while there is insulation, there is not sufficient AC. They take really good care of me w/ the varmints, so I decided to build them an outdoor sitting area. I would consider myself “intermediate” as far as carpentry skills, but I can follow directions. The wood and screws cost me around $70. The hardware cloth was around $15 (Be sure you by at least a 2×10 roll). I bought a quart of outdoor paint to protect it for around $12. It took me approximately 4 days (working 2-3 hours at a time) from start to cat enjoying it. Instead of the recommended roofing material, I used plywood and leftover sheet metal over that. This made it a little heavier, but I feel it is a sturdier and more protective roof. I had to use leftover 2×4 blocks to insert under the floor because the braces did not match up with my wall studs to connect. I also drilled some small drain holes in the floor near the front for water drainage.
On a side note, I had to buy an extra 12′ of 2×2 to finish connecting the floor and ceiling. I don’t know if the supplies list is off, but I double checked and my lumberyard delivered what I copied directly from the list on here.
Overall this was a relatively easy project. Just take your time and be patient & your cats will be very happy w/ the finished product.
Other side note.. I used 4″ screws instead of 3 1/2 when recommended… My 2 girls get in it and combined they weigh about 100 lbs. Like I said, it’s sturdy…
