Wood Storage Bin Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy woodworking project is about wood storage bin plans. The project features instructions for building a basic wooden bin made from 1x4s and 2x4s. This wood bin features caster wheels, so it’s ideal if you want to move it frequently. If you remove the caster wheel, the bins are stackable. Make sure you take a look over the rest of the related projects to see alternatives and more projects for your garden. Remember that you might need to adjust the size of the components to suit your needs.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a storage bin

Building the floor frame

Building the floor frame

The first step of the project is to build the bottom frame for the storage bin. Cut the components from 1×4 lumber and drill pocket holes at both ends of the 10 1/2″ long components. Align the edges with attention and insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock them together tightly. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are square.

Next, attach the 1×4 slats to the frame, as shown in the diagram. Align the edges and leave no gaps between the components. Drill pilot holes through the slats and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the frame.

Continue the project by assembling the frames for the sides of the bin. Cut the components from 2×4 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal component and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the vertical supports. Make sure the corners are square before inserting the screws.

Lay the 1×4 slats on a level surface and attach the frames into place, as shown in the plans. Drill pilot holes and insert 2″ screws through the frames into the side slats.

Fill the holes and dents with wood putty and let it dry out for several hours. Use 120-200 grit sandpaper to smooth the surface. Remember that you can adjust the design and size of the bin to suit your needs.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the components from decay, we recommend you to apply paint or stain.
