Tiny House Loft Plans

This step by step diy woodworking project is about tiny house loft plans. This is PART 3 of the tiny house project, so make sure you check out everything else for a complete understanding of the plans. In this article, I show you how to frame the loft for the tiny house, as well as how to attach the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the exterior of the walls.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. How to build a loft for a tiny house

Fitting the loft joists

The first step of the project is to attach the 2×8 beams to the supports. Align the beams at both ends, drill pilot holes and secure them to the studs using several 2 1/2″ screws.

Remember that you can enhance the loft to the whole surface of the tiny house, except for the ladder area. The plans are extremely customizable and you can adjust them to suit your needs with minimal effort.

Next, fit the 2×8 blockings between the beams, to enhance the rigidity of the frame. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ galvanized screws into beams. In addition, fit a piece to the end of the loft.

Loft frame

Install the intermediary blockings to the beams, as shown in the plans. Space the blockings as shown in the diagram, so that you can fit the flooring afterwards. Use screws to lock the blockings to the beams tightly. Use a square to make sure the corners are right angled.

Attach the 3/4″ plywood sheets beams, as shown in the diagram. Leave no gaps between the sheets for a professional result. Insert 1 1/4″ screws every 8″ along the joists.

Fitting the sheets to the front wall

Continue the project by fitting the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the front wall of the tiny house. Cut the sheets at the right dimensions and hang them to the wall frames with 1 1/4″ screws, every 8″. Leave no gaps between the sheets for a professional result.

Plywood around door opening

You need to make a few cuts to the plywood panel around the door opening. Mark the cut lines on the sheet and get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper for a professional result.

Fitting the sheets to the back wall

Next, you need to attach the 3/4″ plywood panels to the back wall of the tiny house. Align the edges until they are flush and secure the sheets to the framing with 1 1/4″ screws, every 8″.

Make a few cuts to the panel that goes around the door opening, as shown in the plans.

Fitting the walls – Side 1

Next, you need to attach the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the sides of the tiny house.

Make a few cuts with a circular saw to the panels that go around the small windows.

Attach the plywood sheets to the opposite side wall, using the same techniques described above.

Cut the panels that are fit around the large windows.

Tiny house loft

Fill the holes with wood putty and let them dry out for a few hours. Smooth the surface with 100-220 grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.
