Outhouse Roof Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy woodworking project is about a outhouse roof plans. This is PART 2 of the outhouse project, so make sure you check out the rest of the plans before starting the actual building process. This lean to roof is easy to build and it doesn’t require complex woodworking skills. Even if you are a novice you can get the job done with little attention. Take a look over the rest of our woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a lean to outhouse roof

Building-the-rafters

Building-the-rafters

Firstly, you need to build the three rafters for the roof. Mark the cut lines on the rafters and make the notches with a saw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper before fitting them into place.

Fitting-the-rafters---outhouse

Fitting-the-rafters—outhouse

Fit the rafters to the top of the outhouse. Place the rafters equally-spaced, drill pilot holes and secure them into place with 2 1/2″ screws. In addition, you need to fit 2×4 blockings to the front of the rafters. Drill pocket holes at both ends and secure them to the rafters with 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the edges are flush before inserting the screws.

Side Walls

Side Walls

Fit 1×6 slats to the sides of the outhouse. Leave no gaps between the slats, drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the frame.

Next, fit the 1×6 slats to the back of the structure. Leave no gaps between the slats and secure them into place with 2″ nails or 1 1/4″ screws. Make some notches to the top slat, so it can fit around the rafters.

Front wall

Front wall

Attach 1×6 slats to the front of the outhouse. Align both ends of the slats, making sure the edges are flush before inserting the screws.

Fitting the roofing slats

Fitting the roofing slats

Fit 1×6 slats to the top of the outhouse. Center the slats to the rafters, so that you get equal overhangs on both sides. Leave no gaps between the slats and make sure the edges are flush. Use 1 1/4″ galvanized screws to secure the slats into place. You can cover the roof with tar paper and install asphalt shingles, for a better result on the long run.

Fitting the roof trims

Fitting the roof trims

Fit 1×4 trims to the exterior of the side walls and secure them into place with 2″ brad nails. In addition, attach a 1×6 trim to the front of the roof.
