Building a 8x8 Short Shed with Gable Roof

This step by step diy project is about 8×8 short shed roof plans. This is PART 2 of the shed project, where I show you how to build the gable roof for this 8×8 short shed. In addition, I show you how to frame a basic shed door and hang it into place. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration. Remember that you need to select the site for the shed with attention and that you have to comply with a few legal regulations.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. Building a 8×8 short shed with gable roof

Building-the-rafters

The first step of the project is to build the rafters for the shed. Mark the cut lines on the 2×4 beams and then get the job done with a saw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper. As you can easily notice in the plans, you need to make 15 degree cuts to both ends.

Fitting-the-rafters

Fit the rafters to the top of the short shed, making sure you place them every 24″ on center. Use rafter ties to lock the rafters to the top plates. In addition, Lock the adjacent rafters together with 3 1/2″ screws, after drilling pilot holes. Alternatively, you can use 1/2″ plywood gussets to lock the rafters together into trusses.

Gable-end-supports

Fit 2×4 supports to the front and back ends of the shed, so you fit the gable end panels. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws so you lock them into place tightly.

Cut two pieces of T1-11 siding and then secure them into place with 4d nails. Leave no gaps between the siding and then make sure the joints are rigid.

Fit the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the top of the short shed roof. Leave no gaps between the sheets and align the edges flush. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws so you secure the sheets into place tightly.

Roof-rafters

Use 2×6 lumber for the front and back roof trims. Make 15 degree cuts to both ends of the trims.

Fit the trims to the front and back of the roof, making sure you align the edges flush. Use 2 1/2″ nails to secure the trims into place. Attach the 1×6 side trims to the end of the rafters. Use nails to secure the trims into place tightly.

Building-the-door

Assemble the door from the panel that you have cut out in the previous steps. Attach 2×4 trims to the door, as shown in the plans. Use 2″ screws and glue to lock the components together tightly.

Attach 2×4 slats around the door opening, as door jambs. Align the edges flush and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the jambs into place tightly.

Fit the door into the opening and use hinges and a latch to lock it into place tightly. Make sure the door opens and closes properly for a neat result.

Cover the roof of the shed with roofing felt, making sure the strips overlap at least 2″. Secure the tar paper to the plywood sheets with roofing staples. In addition, cut a large piece for the top ridge. Fit the side drip edges over the roofing felt, while the bottom drip edges should be fit under. Read the instructions labeled on the asphalt shingle packs before installing them into place tightly. Start with the bottom left side of the roof and install them all the way to the top.

Take care of the finishing touches for a professional result. Fill the holes and the cracks with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain to enhance the look of the shed and to protect the components from decay.

This 8×8 short shed project can be built in a few days without much effort. In most of the cases you don’t need to get a building permit, but I recommend you to read the local codes before starting the construction.
