Home Shed 8×16 Gable Shed Roof Plans

8×16 Gable Shed Roof Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about 8×16 shed plans. This is PART 2 of the project where I show you how to build the gable roof for this storage garden shed. The roof has a great slope so you can use this shed in any area. If you live in an area with hurricanes, make sure you enhance the joints by installing proper ties. You can easily adjust the size of the overhangs. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a 8×16 gable shed roof

Building-the-rafters

Building-the-rafters

The first step of the project is to build the rafters for the 8×16 shed. As you can see in the plans, you need to mark cut lines at both ends of the rafters and then make the cuts with a saw. Make the birdsmouth cuts to the rafters, as well, so they can fit into place perfectly.

After building the rafters, you need to assemble the trusses. Lay the components on a level surface. Align the edges with attention, making sure you leave no gaps between them.

Fit the trusses to the top of the plates, making sure you place them every 24″ on center. Use a spirit level to plumb the trusses and then use ties to lock them into place tightly.

building-the-overhangs

Building-the-overhangs

Build the front and the back overhangs for the shed from 2×4 lumber. You can easily adjust the size of the overhangs by making the blocking longer. Drill pilot holes through the rafters and then insert 3 1/2″ screws into the blockings.

Secure the blockings to the front and back of the shed with 3 1/2″ screws, after aligning the edges flush and after drilling pilot holes.

In order to enhance the look of the 8×16 shed with a gable roof, you need to attach 1×6 trims to the front and back of the roof. Cut the trims at the right size and shape and secure it into place with 2″ brad nails. Leave no gaps between the trims and smooth them with sandpaper.
