4×8 Coal Bunker Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step woodworking project is about 4×8 coal bunker plans. I have designed this compact wood bunker, so you can store coal and save a lot of space in your yard. This bunker is super easy to build and the best part is that it requires common materials and tools. You can easily adjust the size of the bunker to suit your needs. Take a look over my woodworking plan list HERE.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the bench won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a wood coal bunker

Assembling the shed floor frame

Assembling the shed floor frame

The first step of the project is to build the floor frame for the coal bunker. Therefore, you have to cut the joists from 2×6 lumber, at the dimensions displayed in the plans. Lay the beams on a level surface and then make sure the edges are flush and the corners are square. Drill pilot holes through the rim joists and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components.

Fitting the skids

Next, you need to attach the 4×4 joists under the floor frame. The joists will lift the frame from the ground and protect the components from moisture. Align the edges with attention and use rafter ties to lock the components together tightly. Select the location for the shed and level the surface thoroughly.

Fitting the floor slats

Fitting the floor slats

Continue the woodworking project by attaching the 2×6 boards to the floor frame. Drill pilot holes through the boards and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them to the frame.

Use 2×2 lumber for the wall frames of the coal bunker. Cut the components at the right dimensions and then drill pilot holes through the plates. Align the edges with attention and make sure the corners are square. Insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the wall frames together tightly.

Front-wall-frame

Continue the project assembling the front wall, using the same techniques described above.

Back-wall-frame

Back-wall-frame

Assembling the back wall frame, as well.

Assembling the frames

Assembling the frames

Fit the wall frames to the floor of the coal bunker and align the edges flush. Drill pilot holes through the bottom plates of the walls frames and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the floor. Lock the adjacent walls together tightly with 2 1/2″ screws.

Top side frames

Top side frames

Fit the supports to the top of the side walls. Make angle cuts before locking the supports into place tightly. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.

Tio frame

Top frame

Build the top frame for the coal bunker. Cut the components at the right dimensions and then secure them into place with 2 1/2″ screws. Align the edges and make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the wall slats

Front wall slats

Front wall slats

Fit the 1×4 slats to the front of the bunker. Align the edges flush with the sides of the wall frame and secure them into place with 1 5/8″ screws. Leave no gaps between the slats make sure you create the front door opening, as shown in the plans.

Back wall slats

Back wall slats

Fit the 1×4 slats to the back of the coal bunker. Align the edges and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock them into place tightly.

Side wall slats

Side wall slats

Fit the 1×4 slats to the sides of the coal bunker. Use a circular saw to make the angle cuts, so the slats are flush with the side frames.
