Building a pirate table

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the table. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to use 2×4 lumber when making the components. Use a miter saw to make the angle cuts as accurate as possible.

Top Tip: Smooth the cut edges with a piece of sandpaper if you want to get a professional result. Select lumber that is in a good condition (no cracks, chips or other flaws).

Attaching the supports

Attaching the supports

The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the seat and the tabletop supports into place, as shown in the image. Cut the ends of the 2×4 supports at 15 degrees, if you want to get a professional result.

Align the components with great care, making sure the supports will be perfectly horizontal. Drill pilot holes through the components and lock them together with 3 1/2″ carriage bolts.

Fitting the support

Continue the woodworking project by locking the two sides of the table together by installing a stretcher. Cut the component at the right size and lock it into place with several 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Make sure the corners are square.

The next step is maybe one of the most important stages of the whole project. Building the sides of the pirate table properly will make it looks like a ship. There are many designs you could use, so don’t be afraid to adjust a few things. Make sure you adjust the width of the bottom slat to 2″.

Lay the slats on a level surface and mark the cut lines with a pencil. Adjust the size of the slats at the right dimension by using a circular saw. Make sure you follow the guide lines.

Attaching the slats to the base

Although this step is not compulsory, you should definitely take it into consideration if you want to get a neat result. Therefore, cut the 1×4 slats at the right size and lock them to the frame, starting with the top up to the bottom. Use finishing nails and pre-drill the slats, in order to prevent the wood from splitting.

Attaching the slats

One of the last steps of the project is to attach the slats to the seat frame and to the tabletop. As you can easily notice in the image, we recommend you to use 2×4 lumber.

Center the slats, drill pilot holes and secure them into place with 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Leave about 1/4″ between the slats in order to ensure a proper drainage. Smooth the edges of the slats with sandpaper or use a router to make them round.

Attaching the windows

If you really want to enhance the look of the pirate ship table, you could also attach several decorations to the structure. Therefore, you could cut several round round pieces from 1×6 lumber and attach them to the sides of the table, as shown in the free plans. Use glue and 1 1/4″ brad nails to secure them into place.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the pirate kids picnic table in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
