Building a Kids Work Bench

Building the top of the bench

Building the top of the bench

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the tabletop for the work bench. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to attach the 1×3 trims to the 3/4″ plywood tabletop. Drill pocket holes along the edges of the plywood piece and secure it to the trims, as described in the diagram.

Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to enhance the rigidity of the structure.

Attaching the back

Attaching the back

Continue the woodworking by attaching the back of the work bench. Cut the back panel out of 3/4″ plywood, making sure you take accurate measurements. Smooth the cut edges and secure the piece of plywood to the structure. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess using a damp cloth.

Attaching the legs

Attaching the legs

Attach the 1×3 legs to the work bench, as seen in the image. Drill pilot holes through the legs and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the frame of the tabletop. Add glue to enhance the rigidity of the joints. Plumb the legs with a spirit level before inserting the galvanized screws.

Fitting the braces

Fitting the braces

In order to enhance the structure of the work bench, we recommend you to attach 1×3 braces to the bottom of the work bench, as described in the diagram. Cut the components at the right size and secure them to the legs using 1 1/4″ screws. Work with attention and make sure the corners are right-angled. Leave no gaps between the components.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wood kids bench in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
