This step by step woodworking project is about how to build a planter box with trellis. This article features detailed instructions for building beautiful planter with trellis that requires basic materials and tools. We have designed the plans to keep the expenditures under control and to involve the least amount of work possible.
When buying the lumber, you should select the beams with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the firewood shed won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day.

Planter with trellis plans
The first step of the project is to build the wooden box. Cut the 1×6 slats at the right dimensions and lock them together tightly with screws. The best method is to drill pocket holes at both ends of the short components and to insert 1 1/4″ screws into the perpendicular components. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth. Make sure the corners are square and the edges flush.
Fit the bottom slats to the box, as described in the diagram. Drill pocket holes and secure the slats to the box using 1 1/4″ screws. alternatively, you could insert nails from the outside of the box into the bottom slats.
Next, you need to attach the 1×2 legs to the planter box. Align everything with attention and insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock the legs to the wooden box. Make sure the legs are plumb and leave no gaps between the components.
Next, attach the trims to the top of the planter box. Cut both ends of the trims at 45 degrees and lock them into place using 1 1/4″ finishing nails.
Build the frame for the trellis out of 1×2 lumber. Cut the components at the dimensions indicated in the diagram. The angle cuts are 45 degrees. Drill pilot holes and lock everything with 2 1/2″ screws. Alternatively, you could use nails and glue. Make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws.
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the wooden garden table from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain.

Really good plans. Best I have seen. Interested in outdoor structures, garden, and the like. Looking for planter box plans and found what I needed. Thanks.
Thank you for the feedback. Looking forward to seeing your projects.
Hi, Beginner here. I feel like i’m missing something. For the box, how do you attach the top row 1×6’s to the bottom row of 1×6’s? It seems that there would be two free-standing rectangular squares at the end of step 1.
