How to build an elevated 4×8 garden bed

Building-the-legs

Building-the-legs

The first step of the project is to build the legs for the elevated garden bed. Use 4×4 rough cedar which has the actual dimensions of 3 3/4″x3 3/4″. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to make a notch to the legs. Use a circular saw to make parallel cuts inside the marked area and then remove the excess with a chisel. Smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper.

Next, you need to build the supports for the raised planter. Cut a piece of 2×4 rough ceder (1 3/4″x3 3/4″) and drill pocket holes at both ends. Center the supports to the legs and then lock them into place tightly with 2 1/2″ screws.

Build the walls for the planter box, as shown in the diagram. Drill the pocket holes as shown in the diagram.

Fitting the bottom

Fitting the bottom

Next, you need to build the planter box. Cut the components from 2×6 rough cedar (1 3/4″x3 5 3/4″) at the dimensions shown in the diagram. Lay the bottom slats on a level surface and leave no gaps between them. Align the ends of the slats so you can attach the front and back slats into place. Drill pilot holes through the side slats and insert 3 1/2″ screws. Insert the screws, every 8″.

Fit the side walls to the raised garden bed. Align the edges with attention, making sure the corners are square. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the side slats and secure them to the perpendicular components with 2 1/2″ screws. Drill pilot holes through the side slats and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the bottom slats.

Assembling the elevated garden bed

Once you have assembled the planter box, you should fit it to the supports. Align the edges and make sure the corners are square. Drill pilot holes through the bottom slats and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the supports. In this manner, you will block the planter box to the supports tightly.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the rough surfaces with sandpaper. Fill the planter box with appropriate soil and then plant the vegetables.

9 boards on the bottom would be 51.75″. 8 boards would be 46″. Need to change drawing to 8 bottom boards at 46″.

Thanks for these. Has anyone attempted to build this ‘waist high’? I know there are other designs on this site but I like this setup, it’s very clean and simple. Any other considerations other than making the legs a little taller?

No issues with that mod. It will just change the materials list.
