12×12 Pavilion Roof Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy woodworking project is about a 12×12 outdoor pavilion roof plans. This is PART 2 of the square pavilion project, where I show you how to build the roof and how to attach the decorative trims. The roof has a 45 degree slope, so you can easily drain the water or snow. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a 12×12 pavilion roof

Building-the-rafters

Building-the-rafters

The first step of the project is to build the rafters for the 12×12 pavilion, using 2×6 lumber. Mark the cut lines on the rafters and get the job done with a saw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper, for a professional result.

Fitting-the-rafters---12x12-pavilion

Fit the rafters to the top of the pavilion, as shown in the plans. Use rafters ties to secure the rafters into place.

Gable end trims

Gable end trims

Use 1×6 lumber for the gable end trims. Make 45 degree cuts to one end of the trims.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the gable end trims and then secure them into place with 1 1/4″ screws.

Fitting the roof sheets

Fitting the roof sheets

Cut the roofing sheets from 3/4″ plywood and then lay them to the roof of the pavilion. Align the edges flush and leave no gaps between the sheets. Insert 1 5/8″ screws every 8″ along the rafters, so you lock them into place tightly.

Side roof trims

Side roof trims

Fit 1×6 trims to both sides of the roof. Adjust the width of the trims to 4″ and then secure them into place with 2″ brad nails.

Fitting the roofing

Fitting the roofing

Cover the roof of the shed with roofing felt, making sure the strips overlap at least 2″. Secure the tar paper to the plywood sheets with roofing staples. In addition, cut a large piece for the top ridge. Fit the side drip edges over the roofing felt, while the bottom drip edges should be fit under.

Read the instructions labeled on the asphalt shingle packs before installing them into place tightly. Start with the bottom left side of the roof and install them all the way to the top.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain over the components, so you protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the pavilion.

Download Slketchup and then redo the roof structure.

Just wondering if it’s possible to download the plans and open them in Sketchup so I can modify them?

Hello, I’m in the middle of building your exact plan but I need to reduce the roof pitch to 6/12 , any tips or pointers ? My concern is how to cut the top end of the rafter to fit over the ridge beam w the reduced pitch . Thanks !

Are there any specs on this plan. Specifically wind rating? I have to submit to county for building permit and show rated for 90 mph
