This step by step diy project is about stand up desk plans. If you want to build a basic stand-up desk, while keeping the costs under control,  we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the diagram. Adjust the size of the components with great care and lock them together by using waterproof glue and galvanized screws following the instructions. Make sure the design of the desk matches the style of the rest of the bedroom furniture.

It is essential to choose the right materials before starting the construction and the assembly of the wooden desk As you will see in the project, you need to choose durable lumber with a nice appearance, such as pine, cedar or redwood. Building a stand up desk

Building the sides of the desk

Building the sides of the desk

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of for the stand up desk. Therefore, use 4×4 lumber to build the legs and 1×4 lumber for the supports. After making the cuts, we recommend you to smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supports and secure them to the legs by using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and and make sure the corners are square. The edges should be flush and there should be no gaps.

Continue the project by assembling the main frame of the stand up desk. Therefore, build the front and back supports out of 1×4 lumber and drill pocket holes at both ends. Align everything with attention and insert 1 1/4″ screws through the supports into the legs.

Next, you have to build the bottom shelf and the desk top. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you have to cut these components out of 3/4″ plywood using the pattern described in the image.

Top Tip: Mark the cut lines on the plywood sheets and get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper and remove the excess to make the notches in the plywood sheets using a chisel.

Drill pocket holes through the 1×4 supports before fitting the plywood components into place. The next step of the woodworking project is to fit the components into place and to make sure there are no gaps between the components.

Check if the corners are right angled and add glue to the joints before inserting the galvanized screws. Next, insert the 1 1/4″ screws through the supports into the plywood components.

Afterwards, build the top shelf for the desk. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to attach a 1×4 support to the top of the back legs. Drill pilot holes and secure the slat into place by using 1 1/4″ screws.

Build the shelf out of 3/4″ plywood and smooth the edges with sandpaper. Remove the residues with a damp cloth. Drill pocket holes along the top of the support and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the shelf. Add glue to enhance the bond of the components.

If you want to add your personal touch to the stand up desk, we strongly recommend you to fit a piece of 1/2″ plywood to the deck structure, as described in the diagram. Smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper and secure the piece into place by using finishing nails and waterproof glue. Make sure the edges are flush with the structure.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden desk in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
