Building a platform bed with storage
Building the bed frame
The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame of the platform bed. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components out of 2×6 lumber. Cut the components at the right size and drill pocket holes at both ends of the yellow components.
Align the edges with great attention and lock them together using 2 1/2″ screws. Add waterproof glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.
Building the corner legs
Build the corner legs out of 4×4 lumber. Use a circular saw to make the angle cuts to the exposed faces of the component. Smooth the cuts with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.
Attaching the legs
Drill pilot holes through the frame and insert 2 1/2″ galvanized screws into the corner legs, after aligning them with great care. In order to add support to the storage platform bed, we recommend you to attach 2×4 legs to the rest of the components, as in the diagram.
Attaching the plywood pieces
The next step of the project is to attach the plywood sheets to the bed frame, in order to create a horizontal surface. Make sure the edges are perfectly flush and secure the sheets to the structure using 1 1/4″ screws. Leave no gaps between the components and make sure the head of the screws are no protruding.
Building the frame of the storage unit
After assembling the platform bed frame, you need to build the storage unit. As you can see in the image, build the components out of 3/4″ hardwood plywood. Smooth the cut edges and drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components.
Top Tip: Align the components, making sure the edges are flush and insert 1 1/4″ screws to create rigid joints. Make sure the corners are right-angled and add glue.
Building the partitions
Build the partitions out of 3/4″ plywood. Mark the cut lines on the sheets and get the job done with a circular saw. Remove the excess material with a chisel, in order to create the notches. Smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper.
Assembling the storage unit
Drill pocket holes at both ends of the components and lock them together, as in the diagram. Fit the partitions inside the frame and secure them using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are square after fitting each component into place.
Attaching the back
Build the back of the storage unit out of 1/4″ plywood. Mark the cut lines on the plywood sheet and get the job done with a circular saw. Align the components with attention, making sure the edges are flush, before inserting the nails. Add glue to enhance the bond of the components.
Platform storage bed frame plans
One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.
Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the stand from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Secure the storage unit to the platform with nails and glue.
