Building a king size bed frame

Building the headboard panel

Building the headboard panel

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the panel for the headboard. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you have to build the panel out of 1×6 slats and to lock them together with 1×6 cleats. Lay the slats on a level surface and secure them together using the wooden cleats.

Make sure the edges are perfectly aligned and leave no gaps between the components. Next, secure the cleats to the slats by using galvanized screws and waterproof glue.

Attaching the legs to the headboard

Attaching the legs to the headboard

The next step of the woodworking project is to attach the legs to the headboard. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to build the legs out of 4×4 lumber. Smooth the ends with sandpaper and drill pocket holes at both ends of the cleats. Insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock the components together.

Assembling the headboard

Assembling the headboard

Continue the project by attaching the top 2×4 component to the headboard, as in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the component and secure it to the headboard. In addition, fit a 2×4 support to the bottom of the legs, in order to add support to the structure.

Building the footboard panel

Next, you have to build the footboard for the king size bed frame. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the panel out of 1×6 lumber and the cleats out of 1×4 lumber. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to enhance the bond of the joints. Insert finishing nails to get a professional result.

Continue the project by attaching the 4×4 legs to the panel, as in the diagram. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the cleats and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the legs. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Next, attach the top component to the footboard. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to leave no gaps between the components and to secure it into place using 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to enhance the bond of the component.

Fitting the top trims

In order to enhance the look of the headboard and of the footboard, we recommend you to attach 2×6 trims to the top. Center the trims with great care and secure them with brad nails and glue.

Fitting the side slats

The next step of the project is to lock the headboard and the footboard together, using the 1×10 slats you see in the diagram. Cut the slats at the right size and drill pocket holes at both ends. Align the components with great care and insert 1 1/4″ screws to create rigid joints.

Fitting the cleats

Fitting the cleats

Continue the project by fitting the 2×4 cleats to the interior faces of the bed frame. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to use a spirit level to make sure the cleat is perfectly horizontal. Drill pilot holes and secure the cleat into place using 2″ screws. Add glue to enhance the bond of the components.

Fitting the support slats

In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to fit 1×4 slats to the cleats. Place the support slats equally-spaced and secure them to the cleats using 1 1/4″ screws or finishing nails.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden bed in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.

This started off as a great project, until I cut all 18 support slats at 60 1/2″ long as per the material list and found out that they were supposed to be 76 1/2″ per the picture at the bottom. Just waisted $40 of wood because your directions were wrong! Not very happy right now. Can’t finish the project now and have to spend another fourty bucks and another trip to the hardware store to get more wood. Please fix this so others don’t make the same mistake I did!
