DIY Wine Rack Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy woodworking project is about diy wine rack plans. The project features instructions for building a medium-sized wine rack with glass supports. If you want to customize this project, you can choose an unique finish or make it wider (for more bottles of wine). You can use pallet or scrap wood to get the job done in a professional manner. Work with attention and make adjustments to the design and overall dimensions if you want to get the job done in a professional manner.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a wine rack

Building the vertical supports

Building the vertical supports

The first step of the project is to build the supports for the wine rack. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to mark the cut lines on the 1×4 slats and to make the cuts with a jigsaw. Smooth the edges with 120-220 grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Fitting the bottom supports

Fitting the bottom supports

Cut two pieces of 1×4 lumber and drill pocket holes at both ends. Fit the slats to the vertical supports, as shown in the diagram. Use 1 1/4″ screws to lock the vertical supports together. Make sure the corners are square before inserting the screws, to get a professional result. Remember that you can adjust the width of the wine shelf to suit your needs.

Fitting the top support

Fit the 1×2 support to the top of the vertical supports. Drill pilot holes through the slat and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the supports. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled.

Next, you need to build the wine glass rack. Mark the cut lines on the 1×4 slat and make the notches using a jigsaw. Remove the excess with a chisel. Smooth the edges with sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth. You should adjust the size of the notches and the distance between them according to the glasses you have.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the components from decay, we recommend you to apply paint or stain.
