Building a corner hutch for twin storage beds

Building the side walls

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame for the wooden box. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components out of 2×2 lumber. Cut the components at the right size and secure them together using 2 1/2″ screws.

Make sure the edges are flush and the corners are perfectly square. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth. Repeat the process for the other frame.

Assembling the frame of the box

The next step of the project is to assemble the box for the corner hutch. Therefore, add the rest of the components in order to build the wooden box, as described in the diagram. Make sure the corners are right-angled before inserting the screws. You could use either pocket or pilot holes.

Attaching the exterior walls

Attach 1/4″ plywood to the exposed exterior walls, as in the diagram. Cut the components at the appropriate size and secure them to the frames with finishing nails and glue. Leave no gaps between the components and make sure the edges are flush. Smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper.

Fitting the top component

Continue the project by fitting the 3/4″ plywood sheet to the top of the box, as described in the image. Align the sheet with great attention and secure it into place using waterproof glue and finishing nails.

Building the outer components

Build the exterior components for the storage compartment out of 1×16 lumber or out of 2/4″ hardwood plywood. Mark the cut lines on the slats and get the job done with a circular saw. Make sure the blade of the saw goes exactly over the lines, for a professional result.

Smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues before drill pocket holes along the bottom and vertical (the long one) edges.

Fitting the exterior components

Lay the components to the box, making sure the edges are perfectly flush one with another. Insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock the components into place. Leave no gaps between the components and add glue to enhance the bond of the joints.

Fitting the partitions

In order to enhance the look and to add storage space to the hutch, we recommend you to fit 1×8 partitions to the structure, as described in the diagram. Drill pocket holes and insert 1 1/4″ screws to a create rigid and durable bond between the components. Make sure the corners are right-angled before fitting the screws into place.

Building the top components

Building the tabletops for the structure is a complex project as it requires accurate measurements and the use of professional tools. Draw the cut lines with a pencil over the plywood sheet and get the job done with a jigsaw for the curved cuts and a circular saw for the straight cuts.

Fitting the top components

Fit the components into place and add glue to the joints. Make sure the edges are flush and leave no gaps between the components. In addition, insert finishing nails to create rigid joints.

Corner hutch plans

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the stand from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Fit the corner hutch to the room and attach the twin storage beds.
