Home Furniture Swing Bed Plan

Swing Bed Plan

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about swing bed plans. I have designed this super simple swing bed, so you can spend amazing relaxation moments in your garden. The bed frame is designed for a twin size mattress (39″x74″), but you can make modifications to suit your needs. Take a look over the rest of our woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building-the-swing-bed-frame

The first step of the project is to build the frame of the swing bed. Cut the frame components from 2×6 lumber, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the front beams and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the side beams. Drill pilot holes through the side components and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the back component.

Fitting the cleats

Fitting the cleats

Fit 2×2 cleats to the interior of the frame. Align the edges, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to secure them into place tightly.

Fitting the base slats

Fitting the base slats

Fit the 1×4 slats to the bottom of the bed frame. Align the edges and place a piece of 3 3/4″ lumber between the slats, so you create even gaps. Use 1 5/8″ screws to lock the slats into place tightly.

Backrests

Backrests

Build the backrest supports from 2×4 lumber. Use a miter saw to make the 15 degree cut to the backrest supports. Use a jigsaw to round the exposed corner and smooth it with sandpaper.

Middle supports

Middle supports

For the middle backrest supports you need to make a few things. Use 2×6 lumber to make the supports that will go on both sides of the supports. Drill pocket holes along the straight end. Use 2 1/2″ screws to secure these small braces to the vertical support.
