Building a bar stool

Building the frame of the stool

Building the frame of the stool

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the sides of the bar stool. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to use 2×2 lumber for the legs and 1×4 lumber for the slats.

Take accurate measurements and smooth the cut edges after making the cuts using a saw. Make sure the edges are flush and check if the corners are square before attaching the slats to the legs by using 1 1/4″  screws.

Continue the outdoor project by attaching the slats to the sides of the bar stool. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to place the rest of the 1×4 slats to the sides, as described in the diagram.

Leave 1/2″ between the slats and secure them to the legs by using 1 1/4″ screws.

Fitting the side slats

Fitting the side slats

After building the sides of the bar stool, we recommend you to lock them together by fitting 1×4 slats on both sides of the structure. Adjust the length of the slats at the right size and secure them to the legs using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure you pre-drill the components before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.

Make sure the corners are square and leave no gaps between the components. add glue to enhance the bond of the joints.

Fitting the seat

Fitting the seat

After assembling the main frame of the bar stool, we recommend you to attach the 1×4 slats to the structure, in order to build the seat. Smooth the ends of the slats with fine-grit sandpaper and make sure all the slats are cut at the same size. Place the slats equally spaced and leave 1/8″ between them.

Drill pilot tholes through the slats and insert 1 1/4″” screws into the structure of the bar stool. Make sure the head of the screws are at the same level with the seat surface.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Place the wooden bar stool in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
