Deck Table Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about deck table plans. If you want to enhance the look of your backyard deck with a beautiful wooden side table, we recommend you to pay attention to the instructions described in the article. Before starting the actual construction of the table, we recommend you to adjust the designs and the size of the table to suit your needs and budget. Don’t forget to check out the rest of the related projects featured on our site.

Align the wooden components at both hand before driving in the screws. Don’t forget to pre-drill holes in the components, as to prevent the wood from splitting. Moreover, don’t forget to countersink the head of the screws, before inserting the wooden screws. Last but not least, apply a good wood filler in the holes, let it dry out properly and sand the surface thoroughly with 120-grit sandpaper, before applying the final coats of stain. Building a deck table

Building the legs

Building the legs

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the legs for the deck table. as you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to mark the cut lines on the 2×2 piece of lumber and get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues

Repeat the process on an adjacent side of the legs, in order to add a decorative effect to them. Take accurate measurements for a professional result.

Building the frame of the table

Next, build the frame for the tabletop. Build the components out of 1×4 lumber, after taking accurate measurements. Smooth the cut edges and remove the residues with a vacuum. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the front and back components (the yellow ones) and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the perpendicular aprons.

Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints. Before inserting the screws, check if the edges are flush one with another.

Fitting the cleats

Fitting the cleats

Fitting the 1×2 cleats to the sides of the deck table is a straight-forward process. Therefore, drill pocket holes along one side of the cleats and secure the to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws.

Top Tip: Leave 3/4″ front the top edge of the frame to the cleats, in order to fit the tabletop slats. Use a spirit level to check if the wooden cleats are perfectly horizontal.

Fitting the legs

Fitting the legs

The next step of the deck table project is to attach the 2×2 legs into place. as you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to secure the wooden legs to the four corners of the table. Drill pilot holes through the wooden legs before inserting the 2″ screws into the frame of the table.

In addition, we recommend you to add glue to the joints, in order to enhance the bond of the components. Plumb the legs with a spirit level and smooth the exposed edges with sandpaper.

Fitting the tabletop slats

Fitting the tabletop slats

One of the last steps of the backyard project is to fit the 1×3 slats to the top of the table. Cut the slats at the right size and smooth the edges with sandpaper. Place the slats equally-spaced, by placing between them a 1/2″ thick piece of wood.

Drill pilot holes through the cleats and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the top slats. In this manner, you will create a rigid structure and the head of the screws will not be visible. Add glue to the joints.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, you need to fill the cracks with wood putty and let it dry out for several hours. Afterwards, sand the wooden surfaces with 120-grit sandpaper and vacuum the residues thoroughly.

Top Tip: Protect the wooden components from wood decay by applying several coats of stain or paint.
