Building a crib

Building the bed frame

Building the bed frame

The first step of the project is to build the bed frame for the crib. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to assemble the bed frame out of 1×3 lumber.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the long components and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the perpendicular components. Make sure the corners are right-angled and add glue to the joints. Attach the 1×1 cleats to the interior faces of the bed frame.

Fitting the support slats

Fitting the support slats

Continue the project by attaching the 1×3 support slats to the cleats. Cut the support slats at the right size and fit them to the bed frame. Drill pilot holes through the slats and secure them to the cleats, by suing 1 1/4″ screws.

Building the front and back walls

Building the front and back walls

Building the front and the back face of the crib is a straight-forward process, as you need to assemble the frame out of 1×3 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the vertical components and secure them to the horizontal components.

Top Tip: Cut the balusters out of 1×2 lumber and drill pocket holes. Fit the balusters inside the frame and lock them using 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints.

Building the side walls

Building the side walls

The next step of the project is to build the sides of the crib. Build the frame of the walls out of 1×3 lumber (use 1×4 lumber for the bottom component). Drill pocket holes at both ends of the side components and secure them to the top and bottom components. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right-angled.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the 1×2 balusters and fit them between the frame. Insert 1 1/4″ screws into the frame and place them equally-spaced.

Continue the project by assembling the frame of the crib together. Drill pocket holes along the side components of the front and face walls. Align everything with great care and make sure the corners are right-angled. Add glue to the joints and make sure there are no gaps between the components.

Fitting the legs

Fitting the legs

Attach the 1×3 legs to the crib, as described in the plans. Smooth the cut edges of the legs and secure them to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws. Pre-drill the components before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

Fitting the bed frame

Fit the bed frame inside the crib and make sure it is perfectly horizontal, by placing a spirit level on top of the support slats. Drill pilot holes through the bed frame and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the crib. Add glue to the joints and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the bed from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the bed in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
