Home Bench 6 ft Farmhouse Bench Plans

6 ft Farmhouse Bench Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about 6ft farmhouse bench plans. This 6 ft farmhouse bench is designed to go with the matching table. This bench has a sturdy design and it is super easy to build. You can adjust it to suit your needs. Take a look over the rest of our woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a 6ft wood farmhouse table

Building the base

Building the base

The first step of the project is to build the base for the bench. Cut the 4×4 beam at 16 1/2″ and then make the decorative cuts. Use a circular saw to make parallel cuts to the beam and then clean the recess with a chisel. Smooth the surface with sandpaper.

Assembling-the-sides

Assembling-the-sides

The next step of the project is to assemble the side frames for the bench. Use 4×4 lumber for the middle support and 2×4 lumber for the top.

Fitting the side braces

Fitting the side braces

Use 2×4 lumber for the braces. Use a miter saw to make the 45 degree cuts to both ends of the braces. Fit the braces to the frames, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly. Use at least 2 screws for each joint.

Building-the-seat

Building-the-seat

Use 2×6 lumber for the bench seat. Drill pocket holes to the slats, as show in the diagram. Lay the slats on a level surface and align the edges with attention. Leave no gaps between the slats for a professional result. Insert 2 1/2″ screws and add glue to the joints so you lock everything together tightly.

Fitting-the-stretcher

Fitting-the-stretcher

Use 2×4 lumber for the stretcher. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the stretcher and then secure it to the sides of the bench with 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and center the stretcher into place tightly.

Attaching the seat

The next step of the project is to center the bench frame to the seat. Drill pilot holes through the stretcher and to the sides and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the components together  tightly.

Fitting the braces

Use 2×4 lumber for the braces. Use a miter saw to make the 45 degree cuts to both ends of the braces. Fit the braces under the bench, drill pilot holes and then insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of stain over the bench to enhance the look of the project and to make it last time and the elements.

Through the stretcher, insert screws into the seat.

I’m just getting to installing frame to the bench seat.. do you suggest drilling holes at angle through the stretcher to the seat or straight down from the top of the strecher.. i just dont want screws to come through seat…

It says in the article how to do it, if you want to hide the screw heads.
