This step by step diy project is about 12×12 hip roof for gazebo plans. This is PART 2 of the outdoor pavilion project where I show you how to build the hip roof structure for the 12×12 pergola. I show you all you need to know about framing a beautiful hip roof. If you want a garden gazebo with a hip roof to match your house design check out my free instructions. Make sure you read the local codes so you can comply with the legal requirements. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.
When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

It’s that simple to build a wooden gazebo with a hip roof – Video!
12×12 Shed Hip Roof Plans
The first step of the project is to install the king post. Center the 2×2 piece of lumber to the middle top plate. Drill pocket holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.
The first step of the project is to build the common rafters for the hip roof carport. Use a miter saw to make 25 degree cuts at both ends of the beams.
Use 2×6 lumber for the common rafters. Use a miter saw to make the 18.5 degree angle cuts to both ends of the rafters, as shown in the diagram.
Fit the common rafters to the top of the 12×12 square wooden gazebo. Align the edges, drill pilot holes and insert screws to lock them into place tightly. Use rafter ties to secure the rafters to the top plates of the gazebo.
Fit the hip rafters to the top of the shed, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws to secure the rafters to the top ridge. Use rafter ties to secure the hip rafters to the top plates.
Next, build the jack rafters for the hip roof of the shed. Use a miter saw and make a simple 25 degree miter cut at one end. Use the miter and make a compound cut for the opposite end: 25 miter cut and 48 degree bevel cut.
Fit the jack rafters to the top of the shed. Start installing the jack rafters from the common rafters toward outside, every 16″ on center. Use rafter ties to the secure the rafters into place tightly. Drill pilot holes and insert the screws.
This is basically the roof structure for a hip shed. This hip roof will be really rigid and durable. Make sure you read the local building codes and adjust the angle of the slope, if needed.
Use 3/4″ plywood for the roof sheets. Cut the sheets at the right dimensions and then lay them to the top of the roof structure. Align the edges flush, leave no gaps between the sheets and insert 1 5/8″ screws, every 8″ along the framing.
Use 1×8 lumber for the roof trims. Cut the trims at the right dimensions and secure them to the end of the rafters. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the trims into place tightly.
Fit the cleats for the railings to the posts of the gazebo. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the cleats and secure them to the posts with 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges flush.
Fit the 2×2 balusters to the cleats, as shown in the diagram. Cut a piece of wood so you create even gaps. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.
Fit 2×6 slats to the top of the balusters. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to secure the slat into place.
Install the roofing felt, starting from the bottom left of the roof. Secure the paper to the roofing, using a stapler. Make sure the tar paper overlaps at least 2”. Don’t forget to cover the top ridge with a 14” strip of paper .
Start the first course of shingles with a full tab, the second with 2 1/2 tabs, the third with 2 tabs, the forth with 1 1/2 tabs, the fifth with 1 tab, the sixth with half tab and the seventh with a 3 tabs.
Make sure you check out PART 1 of the hip roof gazebo project, so you learn how to build the frame of the structure. This square gazebo is easy to build an it is ideal for sheltering a hot tub or for a dinning area. Please take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, because I have over 1500 free designs.

I love the way you explain things Awsome! Thank you!
You’re welcome. Thank you for the nice words.
Hi there I’m building a 12×12 with a hip roof gazebo and in your pics it shows the hip rafters at 18.5 degree cut ,but in you explanation it says cut them at 33.5 could you clarify for me thanks.
The diagram is the right one.
Would you happen to have hip roof measurements / cut angles for a 10’x12′ gazebo?
I did some simple math and the cuts aren’t adding up to the supply list. Some board are cut above the required. 8 ft board but the directions having me cut it slightly above 8 ft.
Any ideas or am I reading it wrong? I understand there are bigger board, but those are already accounted for in other cuts.
You are free to redo the materials list.
Hi I am following the 12×12 gazebo plans. What pitch roof do the plans create.
Something between 5 and 6 :12
Hello,
If I purchase the premium plans for this, are the measurements also provided in metric (mm) or only in imperial (in).
Thank you,
Paul
I don’t have any plan in metric. I only design in US system. It says in the FAQs.
