Backyard Playhouse Door and Railings Plans

This step by step diy project is about free playhouse railings and door plans. This is PART 3 of the elevated playhouse project, where I show you how to build the door and how to fit the decorative trims into place, as well as how to build the railings. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. Building playhouse railings

Door-jambs

The first step of the project is to fit the 1×3 jambs around the door window. Align the edges flush and secure the jambs into place tightly with 2″ nails.

Building-the-door

Use 3/4″ plywood for the door panel and 1×3 lumber for the trims. Align the edges flush and secure the trims into place tightly with 1 1/4″ nails and glue.

Fitting the door

Fit the door to the opening and align the edges flush. Use hinges to secure the door to the jambs tightly. Moreover, fit a latch so you can lock the door into place tightly.

Window trims

Fit the windows to the sides of the playhouse. Fit 1×3 trims around the window and secure them into place with 2″ nails.

Rail posts

Fit the posts for the rails to the front of the playhouse. Plumb the posts with a spirit level, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.

Front rails

Fit a 2×2 rail to the top of the posts and secure it into place with 2 1/2″ screws. Fit the 2×2 bottom rails between the posts with 2 1/2″ pocket screws. Fit the balusters to the rails, making sure you place them equally spaced (fit a wood block between the balusters for consistent results). Use 2 1/2″ screws to lock the balusters into place tightly.

Fitting the side rails

Assemble the side panel from 2×2 lumber, as well. After assembling it, you need to lock it to the front railings and to the playhouse frame.

Stair supports

Build the supports for the stairs from 2×2 lumber. Make the angle cuts accurately.

Assembling the Stairs

Secure the supports to the frame of the playhouse with 2 1/2″ screws. Fit the steps with 2 1/2″ screws, placing them equally spaced.

Building the rails for the stairs

Build the components for the stair railings from 2×2 lumber. Make cuts to the components for a professional result.

Stair rails

Fit the railings to the stairs with 2 1/2″ screws. Check out PART 1 for learning how to frame the playhouse and PART 2 to learn how to build the roof.

Backyard playhouse plans

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain over the components to enhance the look of the playhouse and to protect the components from the weather elements.
