How to Anchor a Post to Concrete

This woodworking project is about how to anchor a post to a concrete slab. In most of the cases, you this is a straight-forward process, but you need to follow the right instructions and to read the local building codes. Invest in adjustable post anchors, as it will pay off on the long term.

The first method you can choose to anchor the post to the concrete slab is to use an adjustable anchor. If you want to secure the anchor to a concrete footing, you need to lock the fix vertical component into place, before attaching the anchor.

Makes sure you align the anchors with attention before securing them into concrete, in order to get a professional result. Leave the concrete to dry out for several days in order to create a rigid bond.

The next step of the outdoor project is to set the wooden post into the anchor. As you can easily notice in the project, we recommend you to secure the post temporarily with braces.

Use a spirit level to plumb the post, before attaching the 2×4 braces. Afterwards, insert lag screws and nails into the post, through the anchors. It is essential to make sure the post is plumb when inserting the screws.

Alternatively, you could attach the simpson anchor directly to the concrete slab. As you can notice in the diagram, you need to align the anchors accurately and to lock them to the slab using appropriate bolts.

After fitting the anchors to the concrete slabs, we recommend you fit the wooden posts into place. Use string to align the posts with great care and plumb the posts with a spirit level. Drill pilot holes through the posts and insert the lag bolts on both sides of the anchor. In addition, fit nails into the post to enhance the rigidity of the joints.

Last but not least, you have to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the holes and the cracks with wood filler and let it dry out for several hours, before sanding the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: Protect the wooden components from rot by applying several coats of paint. Make sure the color matches the style of your property before applying the paint.

Be sure to seal the bottom of the wood before it is placed in the support. It is not accessible later and may rot if not coated
