Clamp Rack Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy woodworking project is about clamp rack plans. The project features instructions for building a large clamp rack with caster wheels, using common materials and tools. Make sure you take a look over the rest of the related projects to see alternatives and more projects for your workshop, as well as for your backyard.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a clamp rack with casters

Assembling the bottom frame

Assembling the bottom frame

The first step of the project is to build the frame for the clamp rack from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the 30″ slats and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Make sure the corners are square and add glue to the joints.

Fitting the caster wheels

Fitting the caster wheels

Attach 2″ caster wheels to the frame, as shown in the diagram. Align the caster wheels to the four corners of the frame and secure them into place using 1 1/4″ screws.

Building the legs

Building the legs

Next, you need to build the supports for the clamp rack. As you can notice in the diagram, you should cut both ends of the components at 82.2 degrees. Smooth the edges with sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.

Cutting a notch to the top of the legs

Cutting a notch to the top of the legs

Make a small notch to the top of the supports, as shown in the diagram. Mark the cut lines accurately, before making the cuts.

Next, you need to make notches to the bottom of the supports. Use a circular saw to get the job done to the bottom of the supports.

Continue the woodworking project by making the notches for the horizontal supports. Use a circular saw to make several parallel cuts to the marked areas. Use a chisel to remove the excess and smooth the surface with a damp cloth.

Fitting the horizontal supports

Attach the horizontal supports to the vertical one, as shown in the plans. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the edges are flush and check if the corners are square.

Next, you need to assemble the clamp rack, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the vertical supports and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the bottom frame. In addition, drill pilot holes through the top horizontal slat and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the vertical supports.

Fill the holes and dents with wood putty and let it dry out for several hours. Use 120-200 grit sandpaper to smooth the surface. Remember that you can adjust the design of the clamp rack to suit your needs.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the project and to protect the components from decay, we recommend you to apply paint or stain.
