Free Tiny House Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy woodworking project is about free tiny house plans. The project features instructions for building a 8×12 shed tiny house. If you are looking for plans for a simple and cheap tiny house, you should check our plans. Make sure you take a look over the rest of plans to see alternatives and more projects for your garden.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a 8×12 tiny shed plans

Building the rim joists

Building the rim joists

The first step of the project is to build the rim joists for the tiny house. Build the components from 2×6 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the components and lock them together with 2 1/2″ screws. After building the tow frames, align the edges and lock the together with 2 1/2″ screws.

Make sure the corners are square and check if the diagonals are perfectly equal.

Next, fit the intermediary joists to the frame, as shown in the diagram. Place the joists equally-spaced and use appropriate hardware to lock them into place tightly. Check if the corners are square before assembling the frame together.

Attaching the floor sheets

Attaching the floor sheets

Attach the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the floor frame, as shown in the diagram. Leave no gaps between the sheets and secure them with 1 5/8″ screws, every 8″ along the joists.

Fitting the skids

Fitting the skids

In order to protect the floor from moisture, you need to attach 4×4 skids under the floor frame. Place the skids equally-spaced and lock them to the joists using hardware. Make sure the joists are rigid before continuing the project. In addition, it would be a good idea to remove the vegetation layer and to compact a 2″ layer of gravel before laying the floor frame. Use a spirit level to make sure the surface is horizontal.

Build the side wall with window openings. Cut the components from 2×4 lumber, after taking the measurements shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the studs. Place the studs equally-spaced. In addition, enhance the rigidity of the frame by placing double headers. The double top plates will also add strength to the construction.

Framing the windows

Framing the windows

As you can easily notice in the diagram, framing the windows requires a good preparation, as you need to add supports to the top, bottom and sides.

Building the double headers

Building the double headers

When assembling the double headers, you need to place 1/2″ plywood between the components. Insert 2 1/2″ screws through both sides to enhance the rigidity.

Next, you need to build the opposite wall for the tiny house. Cut the components from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the studs. Make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the side walls

Fitting the side walls

Lift the frames and fit them to the floor of the shed. Use temporary braces to lock the frames to the floor after plumbing the walls with a spirit level. Drill pilot holes through the bottom plate and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the floor.

Building-the-back-wall-frame

Build the back wall in the same manner described above. Make sure the corners are square and place the studs equally-spaced for a professional result.

Building-the-front-wall-frame

Building-the-front-wall-frame

Building the front wall is similar, but you need to frame the door opening as well. Also place a 34″ long 2×4 to the top of the opening if you install a regular 80″ door.

Assembling the frame of the tiny house

Assembling the frame of the tiny house

Fit the front and back walls to the floor of the tiny house, as shown in the plans. Lock the adjacent walls together by inserting 2 1/2″ screws through the studs. Make sure the corners are square.

Attaching the walls - Front

Attaching the walls – Front

Continue the project by attaching the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the front wall. Make cuts to the plywood sheets to fit around the door openings. Use 1 5/8″ screws or nails to lock the sheets to the studs, every 8″.  As you can see in the diagram, you need to leave the top plate exposed. Therefore, align the sheets with the bottom edge of the joists.

Fitting the walls - Back

Fitting the walls – Back

Fit the 4×8 plywood sheets to the back wall of the tiny house. Align the bottom of the sheets to the bottom edge of the joists. Use 1 5/8″ screws or nails to secure the sheets to the frame.

Fitting the walls - Side

Fitting the walls – Side

Fit the sheets to the side of the tiny house shed. As you can notice in the diagram, you need to align the bottom of the sheets to the bottom of the joists. Leave no gaps between the sheets and secure them to the frame using 1 5/8″ screws/nails.

Notches

Notches

As you can notice in the diagram, you need to make notches to the top of the sheets. Use a circular saw and a chisel to create the notches for the rafters.

Fitting the walls - Side with windows

Fitting the walls – Side with windows

Continue the project by attaching the sheets to the side with the window opening. Align everything with great care and secure the sheets into place with 1 5/8″ screws/nails.
