8×20 Gambrel Shed Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about 8×20 gambrel shed plans. If you need extra storage space in your backyard, this gambrel shed will provide it with generosity. This shed features 2×4 framing with 6′ high side walls and a 4′ access door to the front. Make sure you read the local codes and make adjustments if necessary. This shed can also be used as a playhouse or as a bike shed. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building a 8×20 garden shed

First of all, you have to assemble the floor frame. Cut the components from 2×6 lumber at the dimensions shown in the plans. Drill pilot holes through the 96″ long joists and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Make sure the corners are square and align the edges with attention before inserting the screws. Place the joists every 16″ on center.

Fitting the skids

Fitting the skids

Next, fit the 4×4 skids under the floor frame. Use rafter ties to secure the skids to the floor frame. The skids will lift the floor frame from the ground, and it will protect the components from the elements.

Next, attach the 3/4″ plywood panels to the floor frame. Align the edges and leave no gaps between the panels for a professional result. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws every 8″ along the joists. I recommend you to invest in tongue and groove plywood because there will be no gaps between the sheets.

Build the side wall for the shed using the information from the plans. Start by cutting all the components from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ galvanized screws into the studs. Make sure you place the place the studs spaced as shown in the plans, otherwise you won’t be able to install the siding panels. Place the studs every 16″ on center.

Lay the wall frames to the floor of the shed. Use a spirit level to plumb the walls and align the edges flush. Drill pilot holes through the bottom plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the floor. Use temporarily braces to lock the side walls vertically till you add the front and back wall frames.

Build the front wall for the 8×20 barn shed. I have added a large 4′ door to the front of the shed. Use 2×4 lumber for the studs and plates. Use 2×6 lumber for the double header (fit a 1/2″ plywood between the 2×6 headers).

Assemble the back wall for the shed. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the studs. Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square.

After assembling the wall frames, you need to assemble the shed structure. Lay the front and the back walls to the floor of the shed. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes through the bottom plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws. Make sure the corners are right angled.
