This step by step diy project is about 4×8 saltbox wood shed roof plans. This is PART 2 of the wood shed saltbox shed where I show you how to frame the roof and how to fit the decorative trims. When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. How to build a saltbox wood shed roof plans

Building-the-rafters

The first step of the project is to build the rafters for the firewood shed. Mark the cut lines on the beams and then get the job done with a saw. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to make birdsmouth cuts to the rafters, so you can fit them into place tightly.

Front-rafters

Next, you have to build the front rafters from 2×4 lumber. Use a good miter saw to make the 60 degree cut to the beams, as shown in the diagram.

Fitting the rafters

Fit the rafters to the top of the firewood shed and space them as shown in the diagram. Use rafter ties to lock the rafters into place tightly.

Side wall supports

Fit the 2×4 supports to the sides of the shed. Drill pocket holes at both ends and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock the supports into place tightly.

Side walls – Siding

Cut the side panels to the right size and shape and then fit them to the shed frame, as shown in the diagram. Align the edges flush and insert 6″ nails every 8″ along the framing.

Fitting the roof sheets

Use 3/4″ plywood for the roof sheets. Cut the sheets to the right dimensions and then attach them to the top of the roof. Align the edges flush and insert 1 5/8″ screws, every 8″ along the rafters. Leave no gaps between the sheets for a professional result.

Side roof trims

Use 1×6 lumber for the side roof trims. Make the angle cuts to both ends of the trims, as shown in the plans.

Back roof trim

Fit the trims to the sides of the shed. Use 6d nails to lock the trims into place tightly. Fit the trims to the back of the shed.

Roof trims

Fit the 1×6 trim to the front of the shed. Use 2″ nails to lock the trim slat to the end of the rafters tightly, after aligning the ends.

Fitting the roofing

Cover the roof of the shed with roofing felt, making sure the strips overlap at least 2″. Secure the tar paper to the plywood sheets with roofing staples. In addition, cut a 12″ piece for the top ridge. Fit the side drip edges over the roofing felt, while the bottom drip edges should be fit under.

Side trims

Fit the 1×3 trims to the sides of the shed. Align the edges flush and insert 2″ nails to secure them into place tightly.

Fitting the front trims

Fit the 1×3 trims to the front of the shed. Align the edges flush and insert 2″ nails to secure them into place tightly.

Back trims

Fit the trims to the back of the shed, as well.

Opening trims

Last but not least, you need to attach the trims around the front opening. Align the edges flush and insert 2″ nails to lock them into place tightly.
