3×6 Lean to Shed Roof Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about 3×6 shed roof plans. This is PART 2 of the storage shed project, where I show you how to build the lean to roof for the project. In addition, I show you how to build the door and how to fit the decorative trims. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration. Remember that you need to select the site for the shed with attention and that you have to comply with a few legal regulations.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a lean to roof for a 3×6 shed

Building-the-rafters

Building-the-rafters

The first step of the project is to build the rafters for the 3×6 shed. Mark cut lines on the 2×4 beams and then get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the edges with sandpaper and make the birdsmouth cut outs, so you can fit the rafters into place tightly.

Fitting-the-rafters

Fitting-the-rafters

Fit the rafters to the top of the shed. Place the rafters every 24″ on center and then drill pilot holes. Insert 4 1/2″ screws so you can lock the rafters to the top plates properly. In addition, you can install 1×3 blockings between the rafters so you can seal the shed. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the blockings and then secure them into place with 1 1/4″ screws.

Side siding

Side siding

Fit the T1-11 siding panels to the sides of the storage shed. Make the cuts to the sheets and then fit them into place, with 6-8d nails, every 8″ along the framing.

Roof trims

Roof trims

Next, fit the 2×4 trims to the sides of the roof. Fit 1×4 trims to the front and to the back of the shed. Align the edges with attention and then insert 2″ brad nails, so you can lock them into place tightly.

Fitting the roof sheet

Fitting the roof sheet

Fit a sheet of 3/4″ plywood to the top of the 3×6 shed, after cutting it to the right dimensions. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws, to secure the sheets into place. Insert the screws every 8″ along the rafters.

Fitting the roofing

Fitting the roofing

Cover the roof of the shed with roofing felt, making sure the strips overlap at least 2″. Secure the tar paper to the plywood sheets with roofing staples. Fit the side drip edges over the roofing felt, while the bottom drip edges should be fit under. Read the instructions labeled on the asphalt shingle packs before installing them into place tightly. Start with the bottom left side of the roof and install them all the way to the top.

Fitting the door jambs

Fitting the door jambs

Fit the 1×4 door jambs to the front of the shed. Align the edges with attention and insert 2″ nails, every 8″ along the studs, so you can secure the jambs into place tightly.

Use T1-11 siding for the door panel and 1×4 lumber for the trims. Align the edges with attention, add glue to the joints and insert 1 1/4″ nails to lock the door together tightly.

Fitting the door

Fit the door to the opening and then secure it to the jambs with hinges. Check if the door opens and closes properly and then install a latch. Fit handles and then make sure you take care of the finishing touches.

After assembling the small storage shed, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth them with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint and stain over the components to protect them from decay and to enhance the look of the project.

You need to check out PART 1 of the shed, so you learn how to build the frame of the shed. I have a lot more shed projects on the site, so take a look over the rest of the designs.

Hi, in part 2 on the cut list you call for (5) 2×6 – 8′

I cant see any where in the plans where those 2×6’s are needed, unless the rafter detail was mistakenly written as 2×4’s instead of 2×6’s. Can yiubclarify or elaborate? Thanks! Other than that these plans are a breeze and my father and I have had a blast building the lean to!
