16×12 Saltbox Shed Roof Plans

This step by step diy project is about 16×12 saltbox shed roof plans. This is PART 2 of the large storage shed project, where I show you how to build the saltbox shaped roof. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration. Remember that you need to select the site for the shed with attention and that you have to comply with a few legal regulations.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day.

How to build a 16×12 Saltbox Shed Roof

Back wall siding sheets

Back wall siding sheets

The first step of the project is to attach the T1-11 siding sheets to the back of the shed. Align the edges with attention and leave no gaps between the sheets. Insert 6d nails, every 8″ along the framing to secure the sheets into place tightly.

Front wall siding sheets

Front wall siding sheets

Fit the sheets to the front wall of the shed. Use the diagram to cut the sheets properly. Leave no gaps between the sheets and use 6d nails to lock them into place tightly.

Side wall siding

Side wall siding

Fit the T1-11 siding sheets to the side walls, as well. As you can see in the plans, you need to make a few cuts around the window opening. Leave no gaps between the sheets and place them 1 1/2″ below the top ridge.

Building the rafters

Building the rafters

Next, build the rafters for the shed from 2×6 lumber. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to make an angle cut to one end of the rafters and then cut out the birdsmouth. Take accurate measurements so you get a consistent result.

Bottom rafters

Bottom rafters

Use 2×4 lumber for the bottom rafters. Use a miter saw to make the angle cuts at both ends of the rafters. Fit the bottom rafter on a level surface, as shown in the diagram.

Gussets

Gussets

Use 1/2″ plywood for the gussets. Cut the gussets at the right shape and size, as shown in the diagram, and then fit them over the joints, as shown in the plans. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock everything together tightly.

Fitting the trusses to the shed

Fitting the trusses to the shed

Fit the trusses to the top of the 16×12 shed frame. Place the trusses every 16″ on center. Use a spirit level to plumb the trusses and fit rafter ties to secure them to the top plates. The rafter ties will lock the trusses into place tightly.

Side end panels

Side end panels

Use T1-11 siding for the side wall panels. Cut the panels to the right size and shape and then secure them into place with 6-8d nails. Align the edges flush and insert the nails every 8″.
