12×12 Barn Shed Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about 12×12 barn shed plans. If you want to build a storage shed in your backyard that has significant space for many items, you should consider a gambrel shed. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration. Remember that you need to select the site for the shed with attention and that you have to comply with a few legal regulations.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a 12×12 barn shed

Building-the-floor-frame

Building-the-floor-frame

First of all, you need to build the floor for the shed from 2×6 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the rim joists and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the perpendicular components. Make sure the corners are right angled and align the edges flush. Place the joists every 16″ on center.

fitting-the-skids

Fitting-the-skids

Attach 4×4 skids under the floor frame. Drill pilot holes and insert screws to secure the skids to the floor frame. Alternatively, you can use metal connectors.

attaching-the-floor-sheets

Attaching-the-floor-sheets

Lay the 3/4″ plywood sheets to the floor frame of the shed. Align the edges flush and leave no gaps between the sheets. Insert 1 5/8″ screws to secure the sheets into place, every 8″ along the joists.

Building-the-side-walls

Building-the-side-walls

Build the side walls for the barn shed from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws or 16d nails into the studs. Place the studs every 24″ on center.

Lay the side walls to the floor of the barn shed. Use a spirit level to plumb the walls before locking them temporarily into place with 2×4 braces. Drill pilot holes though the bottom plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the floor.

Lay the front and back wall frames to the floor of the shed. Drill pilot holes through the bottom plates and insert 3 1/2″ screws into the floor of the shed. In addition, lock the adjacent walls together with 2 1/2″ screws.

side-siding-panels

Attach the 5/8″ T1-11 siding panels to the sides of the barn shed. Align the edges with attention, leaving no gaps between then and then secure them into place with 8d nails.

front-siding-panels

Front-siding-panels

Attach the siding sheets to the front wall of the shed, as well. Cut out the panel that goes around the door opening. Align the edges flush with the walls and insert 8d nails every 8″ to lock them tightly into place.

Take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the holes with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper. Apply a few coats of paint or stain so you enhance the look of the shed and you protect the components from decay.

Don’t forget to take a look over PART 2 to learn how to build the roof for the gambrel shed.
