Wooden Stilts Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about wooden stilts plans. I have designed this pair of wooden stilts so you can keep your kids entertained. You can make adjustments to the design, if you want to make the stilts taller or shorter. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build easy stilts plans

Stilts

Stilts

The first step of the project is to build the main supports for the wooden stilts. Therefore, cut two pieces of 2×3 lumber at 5′.

Fitting the supports

Next, attach the 9″ long supports to the base of the stilts. Align the edges flush, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them together tightly. Add waterproof glue to the joints.

Building the steps

Building the steps

Continue the outdoor game project by cutting the steps for the stilts. Mark the cut lines on the 2×6 slats and then get the job done with a saw. Make parallel cuts inside the marked area and then clean the notch with a chisel. Smooth the surface with sandpaper. Round the corners of the steps with a jigsaw. Drill pocket holes, so you can secure it into place with 2 1/2″ screws.

Fit the steps to the stilts and then secure them into place with 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the joints are rigid before taking care of the finishing touches.

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and let them harden for a few hours. Smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper and round the exposed edges with a router. Apply a few coats of paint or stain to protect the lumber from the elements and to enhance the look of the stilts.
