Covered Sandbox Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy woodworking project is about covered sandbox plans. Building a nice woodworking sandbox for your kids is a great project if you add a cover to it.  There are several design options to choose from, so we really recommend you to pay attention to the rest of the projects featured on MyOutdoorPlanscom. Invest in high quality materials in order to build a durable sandbox.

On the other hand, we really consider that it is essential to plan every step of the woodworking project from the very beginning, in order to prevent costly mistakes. Work with attention and adjust the size of the sandbox to suit your needs and budget. Place the sandbox on a level surface and make sure you cover the interior of the frame with landscaping fabric, to protect them from moisture and weeds. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building the frame

Building the frame

The first step of the woodworking project is about building the frame of the sandbox. As you can easily notice in the plans, we recommend you to use 2×8 slats.

Top Tip: Drill pilot holes and lock the slats together by inserting 2 1/2″ galvanized screws. Make sure the corners are right-angled by using a carpentry square, every time you add another component.

Fitting the trims

Fitting the trims

In order to enhance the look of the sandbox, we strongly recommend you to attach 1×3 trims over the wooden frame. Align the trims at both ends before locking them together with waterproof glue and 2″ finishing nails.

Top Tip: Although this step is not compulsory it will most certainly add value to your woodworking project. Smooth the edges by using sandpaper or a router and a bit.

Attaching the posts

Attaching the posts

Continue the woodworking project by attaching the 2×2 posts to the frame of the sandbox. As you can easily notice, you should drill pilot holes through the supports and lock them to the frame with 2 1/2″ screws.

Plumb the posts with a spirit level and adjust their size according to your needs. Work with attention and make sure the top of the posts are at the same level, if you want to get a neat result.

Attaching the rafters

Attaching the rafters

One of the last steps of the project is to attach the 1×3 rafters to the top of the posts. Therefore, we recommend you to cut the rafters at the right size and to lock them together with screws, after drilling pilot holes.

Top Tip: Check if the rafters are perfectly horizontal by using a spirit level. Lock the rafters tightly together if you want to get a professional result.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: In order to protect the lumber from water damage, we recommend you to cover the components with several coats of paint. Cover the roofing structure with thick materials in order to create a nice shade over the sandbox.
