Barn Playhouse Railings

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about barn playhouse railings and trims plans. This is PART 3 of the barn playhouse project, where I show you how to build the railings for the porch and how to fit the decorative trims. The gambrel playhouse will have a super nice appearance once you attach the railings and the trims. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build barn playhouse railings

Side roof trims

Side roof trims

The first step of the barn playhouse project is about building the trims for the gambrel roof. Make 22.5 degree cuts to both ends of the 1×4 slats and then secure them into place with 2″ nails. Align the edges flush and leave no gaps between the trims.

Window and door trims

Window and door trims

Fit 1×2 trims around the window openings and 1×3 lumber around the door opening. Align the edges flush and insert 2″ nails to secure them into place tightly.

Porch trim

Porch trim

Fit the 1×6 trim to the porch, as shown in the diagram. Align the edges flush and insert 2″ nails to secure it into place tightly.

Fitting the roofing

Fitting the roofing

Cover the roof of the playhouse with roofing felt, making sure the strips overlap at least 2″. Secure the tar paper to the plywood sheets with roofing staples. In addition, cut a 12″ piece for the top ridge. Fit the side drip edges over the roofing felt, while the bottom drip edges should be fit under.

Building-the-railings

Build the railing panels from 2×2 lumber. After cutting all the components at the right dimensions, you need to lay them on a level surface. Drill pilot holes through the plates and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the balusters. You can cut a wood block as spacer, so you can create even gaps.

Fitting the railings

Fitting the railings

Fit the railing panels into place, as shown in the diagram. Align the edges flush and drill pilot holes, before inserting 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.

Front posts

Front posts

Use 2×2 lumber for the front posts, that will enhance the rigidity of the structure and make the railings secure. Use 2 1/2″ screws to lock the supports to the joists and to the railings.
