Building a window planter box

Side slats

Side slats

The first step of the project is to build the sides of the window planter box. Work with attention and mark the cut lines on the wooden slats, before adjusting their size with a jigsaw.

It is essential to take accurate measurements and to cut the components as described in the plans, otherwise the planter box won’t have a nice appearance. Smooth the cut edges with sandpaper and remove the residues with a cleaner.

End slats

End slats

Make 6 degree-cuts to the bottom of the side components and smooth the edges with sandpaper. Drill pocket holes along the sides of the bottom slat and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the sides components.

Top Tip: Add waterproof glue to the joints, in order to enhance the rigidity of the window planter box. Align the components with great care before inserting the screws.

Fitting the bottom

Fitting the bottom

In order to get the job done in a professional manner, we recommend you to make decorative ends for the window planter box. Therefore, mark the cut lines on a piece of 1×8 lumber and get the job done with a nice jigsaw.

Smooth the edges with sandpaper before fitting the ends into place. Drill pilot holes through the side components and insert galvanized finishing nails into the ends. Add waterproof glue to enhance the bond of the components.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the bar from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Place the box in a proper location and move it whenever necessary.
