Vegtrug Planter Plans

This step by step diy project is about vertrug planter plans. I have designed this vegtrug planter so you can grow vegetables and other plants in your own backyard. You can set the planter box on the patio or on your deck. See all my raised planter bed plans HERE. Make sure you use cedar or other weather resistant lumber. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day.

How to build a Vegtrug

Building the frames

Building the frames

The first step of the project is to build the frames for the vegtrug. Cut the components from 2×4 lumber, as shown in the diagram. Drill poket holes at both ends of the horizontal support and then secure it to the legs with 2 1/2″ screws. Align the edges with attention and make sure the corners are square.

Fitting the bottom slats of the planter

Fitting the bottom slats of the planter

Fit the 2×4 horizontal slats to the 3 frames. Plumb the frames with a spirit level and then secure the bottom slats into place with 2 1/2″ screws, after drilling pilot holes.

Side supports

Use 2×2 lumber for the side supports. Use a saw to make the angle cuts

Fit the supports to the frame of the raised garden bed. Drill pilot holes at both ends of the supports and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the frames to lock them into place tightly.

Fitting the top frame

Fitting the top frame

Use 2×6 lumber for the top frame. Cut the components at the dimensions shown in the diagram and secure them into place with 2 1/2″ screws. Drill pilot holes before inserting the screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.

Fitting the planter slats

Fit the 1×4 slats to form the raised planter box. Align the edges at both ends and then secure them into place with 1 5/8″ screws.

End slats

End slats

Fit 1×4 slats to the sides of the planter. Use a saw to make the angle cuts then lock them into place with 1 5/8″ screws. Leave no gaps between slats for a professional result.

Top trims

Top trims

Fit the top trims to the vegtrug planter. Use 1×6 lumber and 1×2 lumber for the trims. Align the edges with attention and insert 2″ nails and glue

Last but not least, you need to take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes and the dents with wood putty and then smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper.
