V-shaped Elevated Planter Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy project is about v-shaped elevated planter plans. I have designed this simple to build planter box so you can grow vegetables or colorful flowers, directly on your backyard patio. You can build this planter in a weekend using simple tools and materials.. Take a look over the rest of my woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

How to build a V shaped planter

The first step of the project is to build the legs for the planter box. Make 30 degree cuts at both ends of the 2×2 boards and then focus on the half lap joints. Mark the location of the notches to the components and then make 3/4″ deep parallel cuts. Remove the excess with a chisel and smooth the surface with sandpaper.

Assembling the X shaped legs

Assembling the X shaped legs

Assemble the X-shaped legs as shown in the plans. Add glue to the joints, drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/2″ screws.

Next, add the 1×6 boards to the frame of the planter box. Offset the slats at both ends and leave no gaps between the components. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to secure the slats to the legs.

Use 1×6 boards for the slats that go to the ends of the planter box. Make the 30 degree angle cuts with a miter saw. Smooth the edges, fit the slats to the planter, drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock them into place tightly.

Fitting the bottom support

Fitting the bottom support

Use 2×2 lumber for the stretcher. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the support and insert 2 1/2″ screws into the side legs. Add glue to the joints and make sure the corners are right angled.

Use a hand-plane to level the top slats of the planter. Use 1×3 lumber for the side trims and 1×2 lumber for the end trims. Align the edges flush and insert 2″ nails to lock them into place.
