Outdoor Planters Plans

by Ovidiu

This step by step diy woodworking project is about outdoor planters plans. This article features easy to follow instructions for building vertical planters. I have designed this project so that you use 6′ cedar pickets to keep the costs down. In addition, the cedar slats will be much more resistant to moisture than regular pine. Take a look over the rest of our woodworking plans, if you want to get more building inspiration.

When buying the lumber, you should select the planks with great care, making sure they are straight and without any visible flaws (cracks, knots, twists, decay). Investing in cedar or other weather resistant lumber is a good idea, as it will pay off on the long run. Use a spirit level to plumb and align the components, before inserting the galvanized screws, otherwise the project won’t have a symmetrical look. If you have all the materials and tools required for the project, you could get the job done in about a day. See all my Premium Plans HERE.

Building the base

The first step of the project is to build the side support. Cut the 1×6 cedar pickets at the right size, as shown in the diagram. Smooth the edges with sandpaper.

Next, you need to attach the planters to the vertical support. Make sure you pay attention to the diagram when spacing the planters. In addition, you need to check if the corners are square. Center the support to the planters and insert 1 1/4″ galvanized screws. Add glue to the joints and insert at least 4 screws for each joint.

Assembling the first unit

Attach the other leg to the vertical planters. Use a spirit level to make sure the legs are plumb before inserting the 1 1/4″ screws. Center the leg to the planters, as shown in the diagram.

You then need to attach the other planters, as shown in the diagram. As you can easily notice the vertical support should be cut at 60″, slightly larger than the one placed on the other side.

Fitting the second row of planters

As you can notice, you need to place the planters equally spaced. Drive screws through the vertical supports into the planters. Use 4 screws for each joint and add lots of waterproof glue.

Fill the holes with wood putty and let them dry out for a few hours. Smooth the surface with 100-220 grit sandpaper and remove the residues with a damp cloth.
