How to build an extra deep planter box

Building-the-corner-posts

Building-the-corner-posts

The first step of the project is to build the posts for the planter box from 4×4 lumber. As you can easily notice in the diagram, you need to make a notch to the top of the legs. Mark the cut areas to the 4×4 posts and then remove the excess with a saw. Smooth the recess with sandpaper.

Use 2×10 lumber for the planter box. Cut the slats at the right dimensions and then lay them to the posts, as shown in the diagram. Drill pilot holes through the slats and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly. Align the edges with attention and leave no gaps between the slats.

Assembling the planter box

Assembling the planter box

Fit the 2×10 slats to the ends of the planter box. Align the edges with attention and make sure the corners are square. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to secure the slats into place tightly.

Fit the 2×10 slats to the interior of the planter box. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to lock them into place tightly.

Building-the-cleats

Building-the-cleats

Use 2×2 lumber for the bottom cleats. Use a miter saw to make 10 degree cuts to both ends of the cleats.

Fitting the cleats

Fitting the cleats

Fit the cleats to the interior of the planter box. Align the edges with attention, drill pilot holes through the cleats and insert 2 1/2″ screws. Add glue to the joints for a better bond between the components.

Fitting the bottom slats

The next step of the project is to attach the 1×6 slats to the bottom of the planter box. Cut the slats at 21″ and then make two slats 4 1/4″ wide. Lay the slats to the bottom cleats and align the edges with attention. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to lock them into place tightly.

Fitting the top trims

Fitting the top trims

Use 1×6 lumber for the end trims and 1×2 lumber for the side trims. Align the trims with attention and then use 2″ nails, so you can lock them into place tightly. Add glue to the joints for a durable bond.

Last but not least, you should take care of the finishing touches. Fill the holes with wood putty and then let it dry out for several hours. Smooth the surface with 120-220 grit sandpaper and then apply a few coats of paint to protect the components from the elements. Make sure the products are not toxic, so they won’t interfere with the plants you are growing.
