Building a desk

Building the frame of the storage unit

Building the frame of the storage unit

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the storage unit for the desk. As you can easily notice in the diagram, we recommend you to build the components out of 3/4″ hardwood plywood. Mark the cut lines on the sheets and get the job done with a circular saw.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal shelves and secure them to the sides using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and the edges are flush. Add glue to the joints.

Building the partitions

Building the partitions

Building the partitions for the storage unit is the next step of the woodworking project. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to mark the cut lines on the plywood sheets and to get the job done with a circular saw.

Make the notches to the components and remove the excess material using a chisel. Smooth the cuts with a piece of sandpaper and continue the project by making the other component.

Lock the partitions together, after drilling pocket holes at both ends. Leave no gaps between the components and fit them inside the storage unit. Lock the partitions to the storage unit using 1 1/4″ screws.

Attaching the back

Next, you have to build the back of the storage unit out of 3/4″ plywood. Cut the component at the right dimensions and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper. Fit the component to the back of the structure, after drilling pocket holes along the sides.

Top Tip: Leave no gaps between the components and insert 1 1/4″ screws through the back into the sides, in order to create a rigid structure. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess with a damp cloth.

After building the storage unit for the desk, we recommend you to assemble the side legs. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to build the components out of 2×2 lumber. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the horizontal components and secure them to the vertical legs using 2 1/2″ screws.

Building the tabletop for the desk is a straight-forward process, as you need to use a piece of 3/4″ plywood. Take accurate measurements and get the job done with a circular saw. Smooth the edges and lay the component on a level surface.

Drill pocket holes through the legs and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the tabletop. Drill pilot holes through the top of the storage unit and insert screws into the top of the desk. Add glue to enhance the bond of the joints.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the desk from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Fit a nice cushion to the bed frame.
