Building a desk hutch

Building the frame of the hutch

Building the frame of the hutch

The first step of the woodworking project is to build the frame for the hutch. As you can see in the diagram, we recommend you to cut the components at the right size out of 3/4″ hardwood plywood. Smooth the cut edges with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the residues.

Drill pocket holes at both ends of the bottom component and secure it to the sides, using 1 1/4″ screws. Make sure the corners are square and leave no gaps between the components.

Attaching the back

Attaching the back

Continue the project by fitting the back to the frame, as described in the diagram. Cut the component at the right size and smooth the edges with fine-grit sandpaper. Drill pocket holes along the edges and secure it to the frame using 1 1/4″ screws.

Leave no gaps between the components and make sure the edges are perfectly flush. Check if the corners are right-angled and add glue to the joints to enhance the bond of the components.

Fitting the shelves

Fitting the shelves

Next, you have to install the shelves to the structure. Cut the components out of 3/4″ plywood and drill pocket holes at both ends. Place the shelves equally-spaced and make sure the corners are right-angled. Use a spirit level to check if the shelves are horizontal.

Fitting the partitions

Fitting the partitions

Afterwards, you have to fit the 1×2 support to the top of the hutch and the partitions to the bottom opening. Place the partitions equally spaced and drill pocket holes at both ends. Insert 1 1/4″ screws to lock them into place tightly. Make sure the corners are right-angled.

Fitting the top of the hutch

Next, you have to fit the top to the structure. Cut the component at the right size and smooth the edges with sandpaper. Lay the component on a level surface and drill pocket holes along the edges of the side components and through the support.

Center the hutch to the top component and insert 1 1/4″ screws. Add glue to the joints and remove the excess.

Fitting the top trims

In order to enhance the look of the hutch, we recommend you to fit 1×2 trims to the top of the hutch, as described in the diagram. As you can notice, cut the ends at 45 degrees and lock them to the structure using finishing nails and glue. Leave no gaps between the components.

Building the drawers

Building the drawers

Building the drawers for the desk hutch can be done in several ways. One one hand, you can build the drawers and secure them to the frame using slides or you can build the drawers and wax the bottom.

Top Tip: Build the sides out of 1×8 lumber and the bottom out of 3/4″ plywood. Secure the components together tightly and add glue to the joints, for a proper bond.

Fitting the front face

Fitting the front face

The next step of the project is to attach the face to the drawer. In order to get a professional result, we recommend you to cut the component out of 3/4″ plywood and smooth the cut edges with sandpaper.

Remove the residues with a damp cloth before attaching it to the drawer. Drill pocket holes along the sides and insert 1 1/4″ screws into the front face. Add glue to the joints and leave 3/8″ on each side of the drawer.

Installing the drawers

Installing the drawers

Fit the drawers into the opening and fit the slides, in order to open and close them easily. Leave 1/8″ around the drawers and fit a handle to the drawers. Make sure the face of the drawers is level with the structure, otherwise the hutch won’t have a professional result.

One of the last steps of the woodworking project is to take care of the finishing touches. Therefore, fill the pilot holes with wood putty and smooth the surface with 120-grit sandpaper.

Top Tip: If you want to enhance the look of the woodworking project and to protect the stand from decay, we recommend you to cover the components with paint or stain. Secure the hutch to the desk using pocket screws.
